On The Bold and the Beautiful, Thomas Forrester is a legacy character, a talented fashion designer, and is eminently controversial. His deluxe-sized baggage features a long list of crimes and misdemeanors, thanks to his longtime obsession with Hope.
Lately, Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) is concentrating on bettering himself and, as a result, finds himself in a relationship with the woman he loves. However, his valuable perspective is often missing from scenarios or stories. Why is that? We know if given the material, Atkinson would knock it out of the park.
Meanwhile, there’s no problem discovering what other characters on the canvas are thinking and feeling. We’re told their every thought and emotion. For instance, in the wake of Hope (Annika Noelle) and Thomas kissing in Italy, Hope continually unloads her fears, insecurities, and views on the scandal.
Liam (Scott Clifton) has, too (read what Atkinson and Clifton think about a potential role reversal). And now that he’s transferred all of his energy to Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), it’s more of the same. The Spencer heir can’t help but wax poetic about why he’s a safer option for Steffy than Finn (Tanner Novlan) is.
As for Thomas, we’re basically supposed to believe he’s better. It’s what Taylor, Ridge, and Steffy have uttered over and over. But, isn’t it better if we had seen him go to therapy more than once? Instead, it feels like Thomas disappeared for a while, and when he materialized back up at Forrester Creations, there was a new narrative.
Thomas can say he’s a new man over and over again, but if we didn’t actually see the character do the work, are we supposed to believe he’s never going to revert back to his Dark Thomas days? The jury’s still out on whether he’s changed in a black, white, or shades of gray way.
And since his relationship with Hope has progressed, he doesn’t seem to be around for any of the integral conversations. Feels like he should be the one to actually help shed light on his own mental health mindset. What we mostly get is his family standing around the CEO’s office debating his failings and successes. Often, Thomas isn’t even in the room when these chats occur.
More recently, Eric’s (John McCook) massive health crisis required his family to gather, reflect, regret, and debate the Forrester patriarch’s treatment. Thomas jumped in for a little bit of the action, but ultimately, he’s been off…somewhere.
Primarily, we experienced days and days of RJ’s (Joshua Hoffman) innermost thoughts about his granddad when this character has only been around for months. And that’s cool, all we’re saying is remember to spread the love around. In fact, it’s been great finally hearing Zende’s (Delon de Metz) POV. When was the last time this happened?
On top of it all, when Finn and Bridget (Ashley Jones) took Eric off the ventilator, Brooke called the Katie (Heather Tom)/RJ contingent, and then the Hope and Thorne (Winsor Harmon) calls happened off-screen. Are we simply supposed to put two and two together and guess that Hope broke the great news to Thomas? Okay…hmm.
Maybe we simply want to see more Matthew Atkinson on our screens, but ultimately, we’d like to know more about what makes Thomas tick. In addition, it needs to be done consistently. Atkinson’s an actor who can handle the heavy lifting. He’s done so in the past. Hopefully, someday soon, he’ll be given the chance, again — especially since he’s now asked Hope to marry him.
