The Bold and the Beautiful‘s Eric Forrester is so determined to live his last days on his terms that he threw himself a “departy” (or departure party) — one last soiree in glamorous fashion to share precious moments together and prepare for his death. Was this really a good idea?
Eric Forrester: It’s My Party
Eric (John McCook) looks the part of the vital patriarch one minute but is shaking and stumbling the next. Isn’t it more upsetting for family and friends to watch him physically deteriorate in front of their eyes — albeit, in a tuxedo? (Refresh your memory of that here.)
Saying Goodbye
Eric made the rounds at his black-tie affair and had some nice moments. He talked with Hope (Annika Noelle) and Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) — even giving his blessing to their relationship. He shared a tender last dance with Donna (Jennifer Gareis) to show his love. While most of his family were lost in grief by the expressions on their faces, they recognized that they had to do this for Eric.
The Forresters who had known of Eric’s failing health earlier had more time to process the impending loss and keep their emotions in check. For Bridget (Ashley Jones) and Thorne (Winsor Harmon), who just arrived from afar, it was harder to keep it together. Thorne realized it was the time to “not to leave things unsaid.” They had to turn away many times to hide their tears.
Was It Worth It?
Was Eric’s “depart-y” as satisfying for his family members as much as it was for himself? Despite the sadness and difficulty of the occasion, each family member appeared to treasure (what seems like) Eric’s final moments with them. He seemed to enjoy sharing the special occasion with them as well. If given the chance, wouldn’t anyone value the opportunity to be with their dying loved one this way instead of a hospital room? To have that time together was truly a gift.
