A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Strong Performances & Plot Holes

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic’s POV

Thank goodness for the acting talents of Annika Noelle [Hope Logan Spencer], Scott Clifton [Liam Spencer], Matthew Atkinson [Thomas Forrester], and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood [Steffy Forrester Finnegan], because, for the most part, the writing — replete with regurgitated dialogue so repetitive that it must bore the performers as much as it does the viewing public — isn’t doing them any favors.

That said, I really appreciated this bit of dialogue from Hope: “You keep mentioning Thomas, but Steffy has always had a seat at the table in our relationship and our marriage, and you did go see her, didn’t you? Let me guess, you want her back now? Liam, that’s pretty predictable!”

I’ll also grant that the epiphany Hope experienced this week made sound sense. Yes, Thomas does indeed love Hope and only Hope — to his and her and everyone else’s detriment — and he is a man whose loyalties are undivided, but it would have been nice to see glimpses of Hope’s concern running in congress with the scenes we did see play out.

If I had seen Hope blanching over Liam’s frequent visits to the cliff house or heard her grouse to someone that she wasn’t enamored of the time that her husband spent with his ex, that would go a long way in making this all make logical sense. But rather than show me, Brad Bell has told me that that was the case all along.

I’d say fair enough, but this is a long-running problem with B&B. We bear witness to one thing, only to later be told that we saw something else entirely [like the true depth of Carter and Quinn’s affection for one another, which apparently wasn’t that deep after all].

Further B&B Musings

* Given how arbitrarily Finn (Tanner Novlan) has taken to praising how principled his wife is, I think it’s time to begin the countdown to Steffy’s big fall from grace. I’ll start 3…2…

* Seeing as how they clearly have zero interest in actually developing his character in any discernable way, I really have to wonder what the point was of bringing R.J. (Joshua Hoffman) back onto the canvas? Couldn’t his purposeless existence outside of playing talk-to be better filled by one of the MANY other characters on the canvas?
