A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Smart Scripts & Context Is Key

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic’s POV

Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) ain’t got anything on Michael Myers, but I sure do wish this week’s Bold and the Beautiful had been even half as entertaining as a film in the Halloween franchise. As it was, it wasn’t even a good parody.

If nothing else, I’d love to know why Bradley Bell felt the need to paint the FBI in such an unflattering light. Maybe it’s that he’s not a fan of the mega-popular, Dick Wolf-branded trio of series that air on the same network as B&B. Perhaps it’s that he has no earthly idea how the Bureau operates, and he couldn’t be bothered to research. Either way, it was an insult to the agency, to good taste, and, most importantly, to the viewers’ intelligence.

I’d also be curious to know exactly when Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) was conscripted into Bill (Don Diamont) and Ridge’s (Thorsten Kaye) little caper. Context is key.

Oh, and what would Ridge have done if Sheila hadn’t been caught? He’d apparently made the call summoning a plethora of loved ones — and Stephen (Patrick Duffy) and Lucy (Linda Purl) — to his father’s place in the interim between Sheila’s great escape from the asphalt onto which she plunged and her heart stubbornly refusing to go on in the alley behind Il Giardino.

I can just see it now. “Hear this everyone. Bill and I have been colluding lo these many months to wrestle a confession of murder out of the She-devil we call Sheila and we accomplished that goal. Of course, we lost her at the last possible moment, very much our bad — but especially Bill’s — but/if we ever get ahold of her again, we’ll have her dead to rights! Rejoice by kin!!”

One more gripe. Where were Steffy’s (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and Finn’s (Tanner Novlan) invitations? If anybody deserves to be let in on the long con, it’s those two — not to mention Bill’s children. Couldn’t Bobby Ewing and Charlene Matlock have been swapped out for Liam (Scott Clifton) and Wyatt (Darin Brooks)?

Further B&B Musings

* I wonder…are the B&B writers purposefully molding Stephen into the model of hypocrisy or have they truly forgotten that Stephen abandoned his own family for years at a time? Pffffffffffffffff, why am I even asking? Half the things written three months ago are no longer canon, there’s no hope for material laid down over 30 years ago.
