A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Rigidity & Authenticity

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic Muses

Is there a plot on this show that is wholly contrived, or an attempted diversion that doesn’t feel randomly shoehorned in?

You’ll never, ever convince me that Hope (Annika Noelle) would have a scintilla of attraction towards Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) given what he put her and her loved ones through, nor that Katie (Heather Tom) would give Bill (Don Diamont) a second thought — not when she’s got Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) in her bed. (Thank goodness it seems that at least Katie won’t be setting the Women’s Movement back 30 years.)

And try as I have to get behind Taylor’s (Krista Allen) and Brooke’s (Katherine Kelly Lang) sisterhood, the instantaneousness of the thaw left me cold and uninterested.

Ditto Ridge’s (Thorsten Kaye) sudden insistence that RJ (Joshua Hoffman) could be the end-all/be-all at Forrester Creations when the writers have hammered home time and time again that Thomas is the greatest designer the company has ever known. I mean, I get the instinct to set up RJ and Thomas as a latter-day Ridge and Thorne, but there’s an authentic way to go about it, and so far Brad Bell is off the mark.

Oh, and why on earth would Jack Finnegan (Ted King) even bother gracing Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) with his presence if his intention really was to merely tell her never to contact him again? Here’s an idea, simply don’t respond to Sheila’s missives.

But if he were to do that then we wouldn’t have had to suffer through two nonsense episodes full of cross-talk, and why should we be spared that?

Also, what was the point of James Carter Walker Jr.’s cameo? Maybe I would have appreciated it more if I hadn’t already been forced to sit through scenes featuring Charlie (Dick Christie) explaining the difference between Ridge and Ridge Jr. — because apparently, that’s what passes for purposeful comedy these days — but as it stands, I was thankful that what began on Wednesday was wrapped by Thursday.

Further B&B Musings

* SHOCK AND AWE! Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) spies Hope and Thomas…holding hands? Seriously?! Mr. Bell, Search for Tomorrow creator Roy Winsor called and he wants you know that it’s not the 1950s.
