A Critic’s Review of The Bold and the Beautiful: Repeating Past Mistakes

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: A Critic’s Week In Review

For the majority of the week, The Bold and the Beautiful felt like its old self again, what with multiple plot strands, shocking developments, and cliffhangers galore. On the whole it was a thing of beauty…but old habits do die hard.

There was still a whole lot of unnecessary recapitulation – how many times do we have to see/hear Quinn Fuller Forrester (Rena Sofer) and Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) discuss their lingering desire for one another and their dedication to making sure that they don’t repeat past mistakes – and filler scenes like Brooke Logan Forrester (Katherine Kelly Lang), Hope Logan Spencer (Annika Noelle), and Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanana) sitting around talking about Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown).

And why repeat beats from previous storylines? Quinn video calling Eric while he basked in the afterglow of lovemaking with Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis) was a blatant rip-off of the time when Eric video called Carter while he and Quinn were basking in the afterglow of their lovemaking.

Is The Bold and the Beautiful so hard up for ideas that they’re having to plagiarize past scripts?

Also, I have to ask…why was Sheila so darn quick to confess to her sins? As she had so rightfully pointed out moments before, Steffy Forrester Finnegan’s (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) accusation that Sheila was her shooter – and John “Finn” Finnegan’s murderer – came only days after she awoke from a coma with retrograde amnesia.

And besides, where was Steffy’s proof? Sure, you know, and I know, that it was in Sheila’s apartment, but nobody else did.

It was really Steffy’s word against Sheila’s, and Sheila might just have come off looking a bit of the victim. Here was a woman who had just lost her son, in a most harrowing fashion, being accused of his murder by a woman who’d previously shot and wounded her.

The Bold and the Beautiful could have really stretched this storyline out and played it for full dramatic effect – Steffy knows what she knows but can’t prove it; Sheila could work to dispose of the evidence altogether, or frame an innocent, possibly her partner-in-crime, Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson); Steffy could have turned to Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) – or better yet, Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) – for help pursuing the truth – but as it was, it all came to a gloriously soapy end. B&B’s TV brethren could take some notes.

Further B&B Musings

* Did anyone else blanch when Steffy assured Taylor Hayes (Krista Allen) and Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) that Sheila wouldn’t bring a gun into Steffy’s home because Hayes would be present? Sheila’s daughter was present at the Forrester manse when an armed Sheila infiltrated it and shot Stephanie Forrester. How quickly the folks on The Bold and the Beautiful – as well as the show’s writers – forget facts.

* Who’s gonna tell Grace Buckingham (Cassandra Creech) that her daughter well and truly dumped “perfect” Zende Forrester Dominguez (Delon de Metz)?
