A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Betrayal & Comedic Interlude

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic’s POV

Alright, I’ll admit it. The writers really surprised me, and pleasantly so, when they had Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) parrot viewers’ (and critics’) complaints. Yes, Bill’s (Don Diamont) plan made absolutely no sense. In fact, it was downright asinine.

My issue is that they then had Ridge reference that adorable Agent Chen which only served to remind me how equally asinine the excuse was for Sheila’s (Kimberlin Brown) ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card. To sort of quote the great Cher Horowitz, “UGH! As if the freakin’ FBI wouldn’t know what evidence would and wouldn’t be admissible in a court of law.”

Speaking of Sheila, I also appreciated the show addressing the character’s throughline, her deep and abiding need to be loved, and remembering that, previous to Finn (Tanner Novlan), her former burning desire *ah um* make that obsessive passion, was to claim a spot in Eric Forrester’s (John McCook) heart.

Oh, Eric. How obvious it now is that the beloved King of Couture is suffering from an ailment far more insidious than arthritis. It was the little things at first that clued me in. Like him not being able to articulate the word “ball”. And then come Thursday, he couldn’t even recall Hayes’s name.

And I know what you’re thinking, yes, we’d ALL like to forget that Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) blithely named her child after her mother’s abusive ex-husband (Well, BRAD BELL named the child after Taylor’s abusive ex-husband, but that seems to be because he forgot that her maiden name was Hamilton and then decided to double down rather than readdress the faux pas), but it seems crystal clear that there’s an issue yet to be diagnosed.

Further B&B Musings

* As I relayed to my colleagues, the only thing that I’m going to accept at this point is the explanation that Hope (Annika Noelle) has an alternate personality — and a loose one at that — because otherwise this a wholesale betrayal of the character and her throughline.

* Now, granted this is just me postulating, but is anyone else getting the distinct impression that we’re slowly but surely inching our way towards a “Who Killed Sheila” storyline? I mean, how many times this week did Liam (Scott Clifton) encourage Finn (Tanner Novlan) to “Get rid of Sheila” for good/permanently?

* Steffy and Eric’s “twinning” during Thursday’s airshow was a most welcome light and bright comedic spot, as was the (I expect totally unintentional) shot of Sheila slowly poking her head into the frame like a Scooby Doo villain.
