A Critic’s Review Of B&B: A Welcome Surprise And Disbelief

The author’s opinions on B&B are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review and a cheeky critique of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: The Critic’s POV

How ironic that The Bold and the Beautiful, a soap opera normally loath to address its own continuity, has made such an effort as of late to crib from past storylines. Last week, I addressed the overt similarities to how Caroline, Stephanie, and Eric (John McCook) chose to deal with their respective illnesses, and this week, I readied to take B&B to task for repeating its nearly decade-old “Eric’s Right To Storyline” AKA Ridge Jumps The Gun And Pulls The Plug On His Pops.

But then they went and pulled out the big gun that is the return of Susan Flannery. I am agog. Shook. Befuddled. Flummoxed. Going gaga. I did not see that coming.

Still, I can’t let Ridge’s gung-ho-ness to once again help Eric shuffle off this mortal coil go unaddressed. The ego that man must possess. The sheer arrogance. To think he was just going to allow Finn (Tanner Novlan) to “pull the plug” without so much as summoning the family and giving them a chance to say goodbye — not to mention even alerting Kristen, Felicia, and Rick to the fact that their father was ill and dying in the first place.

Speaking of the trio, any and all excuses for their continued absence is, at this point, unacceptable. They could literally phone in their performances. Or Skype. Or huddle, assuming Forrester Creations has a Slack account. (Is it any wonder actress Tracy Lindsey Melchior took to social media to sound off?)

And as for Ridge and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) tisking Thorne (Windsor Harmon) for getting angry that they kept him in the dark about Eric’s plight…esh.

Further B&B Musings

* Only on soaps can one doctor identify the (no doubt surefire) cure-all for a still yet-to-be-named illness that a plethora of other physicians couldn’t. What would the Forresters do without Super Finn?

* While it was nice to hear Stephanie and Phoebe get a shoutout, why not address Angela (Eric and Stephanie’s daughter) and Ally (the couple’s other deceased granddaughter)?

* Why, exactly, did the likes of RJ (Joshua Hoffman), Hope (Annika Noelle), and Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) disperse from the mansion to the office?

Better question, which was the more inappropriate action: Luna (Lisa Yamada) choosing the moment she did to confess her love for RJ (surely there were other ways to comfort him?), or Brooke using what could have been her last moment with Eric to thank him for bringing about her life with Ridge rather that, oh, I don’t know, thanking him for giving her two wonderful children?
