Best of 2019 Soap Opera: Most Beloved Character

Fans love their favorite soap opera and all of the characters on it (OK perhaps some not as much) but there’s always that one character that can do no wrong; that is so beloved that you can’t help but always root for them to overcome any adversity that is thrown their way. In 2019, these were some of Soap Hub’s faves.

The Bold and the Beautiful: Brooke Logan Forrester

Ostensibly the soap’s female star for the past three decades, Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) is a most beloved entity. The character’s rocky relationship with Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) – the bad boy of design – is legendary, and Lang’s ability to produce a tear at the drop of a hat is nearly unparalleled.

Though her screen time has diminished as of late, the devotion that viewers have to Brooke remains as strong as ever, as does their belief that the recent troubles experienced by “Bridge” will soon be laid to rest – upstart Shauna Fulton (Denise Richards) has nothing on their Valley Girl.

Days of our Lives: Jennifer Horton Deveraux

Long the put-upon heroine, Jennifer’s (Melissa Reeves) status as most beloved character was realized after news broke that she would be taking a tumble over a balcony and a massive fan outcry was heard. Luckily, the only damage Jen sustained in the fall was a case of Rip Van Winkle syndrome from which she emerged with gorgeous flowing locks and the ability to still put on her highest heels and glide around the town square.

General Hospital: Franco Baldwin

It took a long time, a very long time, but the fact remains that Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth) – a former serial killer who delighted in making Sam (Kelly Monaco) question whether or not he had sexually assaulted her on her honeymoon – was redeemed. And like all great daytime redemption stories, it happened because of the love of a good woman.

By the time Franco and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) said “I do” in his jail cell (the accommodation he was forced to accept as part of a ruse to draw out the Port Charles serial killer), most viewers were on board with the couple and the powerful “Friz” army was born.

So imagine the shock and horror that reverberated throughout the homes of fans as they watched Franco submit to a procedure that introduced the essence of a wholly different person into his subconscious. By the time the so-called “Frankendrew” saga came to end, Franco’s status as most beloved character was solidified.

The Young and the Restless: Victor Newman

When it appeared that Victor (Eric Braeden) had fallen victim to a murderous scheme concocted by a misguided, revenge-seeking Adam (Mark Grossman), the fans revolted in droves.

They took to the soap opera messages boards declaring that there would no longer be a Y&R without Victor Newman and many threatened to tune out permanently if the character were written out for real. Luckily, the seeming death of the Newman patriarch was revealed to be an elaborate ruse to teach Adam the error of his ways. All this time later, we can’t help thinking that a good old fashioned spanking would just have sufficed.
