A Critic’s Review of The Bold and the Beautiful: Characters And Continuity

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

The Bold and the Beautiful: A Critic’s Week In Review

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, seeing is never believing. You can’t take a character’s words to heart, and you certainly can’t make assumptions based on little things like through lines or continuity.

One day Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) is swearing blind that he’s a changed man, and the next his gleefully helping Brooke Logan Forrester (Katherine Kelly Lang) off the sobriety wagon.

A few months ago, Paris Buckingham (Diamond White) was waxing lyric about Steffy Forrester Finnegan’s (Tanner Novlan) happy life – marriage, motherhood, and the like – and giving the saddest of faces when Zende Forrester (Delon de Metz) tells her that he’d like to keep things between them casual. Now, it’s Paris who wants to live La dolce vita, while Zende is so sprung he’s having an engagement ring made, and forgetting all about a certain lady named Nicole Avant.

In one year’s time, Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) has gone gaga over Zoe Buckingham, become deeply infatuated with Quinn Fuller Forrester (Rena Sofer), briefly contemplated a romance with Katie Logan (Heather Tom), and fallen under Paris’s sway. Is he a naïve romantic, or just plain in love with the idea of being in love?

For months on end, Brooke and Quinn were bitter rivals who couldn’t stand to be in the same city as one another, let alone in the same room. Come Christmas time, they’re laughing and joking about all that’s transpired, and giddily gossiping about their kids.

Here’s hoping that in 2022, The Bold and the Beautiful comes to recognize the value of delineated characterizations, that they manage to remember the history that has come before, that the canvas becomes far more balanced (wouldn’t it be nice to have not only A and B storylines, but C and D ones as well?), and that the plethora of cast aside characters – Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) especially – are remembered.

Oh, and please stop teasing us with plot points that go nowhere ala Brooke’s desire to edge Steffy out as co-CEO of Forrester Creations, and Justin Barber (Aaron D. Spears) acting as Ridge Forrester’s (Thorsten Kaye) begrudging intelligence gatherer.

Also, an actual fashion wouldn’t go amiss. The last time checked, The Bold and the Beautiful is supposed to be a voyeuristic peek inside the superficially glamorous rag trade.

Further B&B Musings

* Leave it to Steffy to blame absent Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) for Kelly injuring her finger. Shouldn’t Steffy, the little girl’s mother, have warned her against touching the mini cactus?

The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Los Angeles, check out all the latest that’s been posted on B&B spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
