Viewers of The Young and the Restless have watched Camryn Grimes grow from playing young Cassie Newman to her older, married twin Mariah Copeland. Now, fans can see her in a role where she’s grown up even more — she’s voicing the role of Mrs. Claus, Santa Claus’s wife, in the Disney movie “Mickey Saves Christmas!” Grimes and fiancé Brock Powell (Hamster & Gretel) sat down with Soap Hub to chat about this new holiday venture.

Camryn Grimes & Brock Powell: Mr. and Mrs. Claus

At the risk of giving away the ending, the animated holiday movie’s title — “Mickey Saves Christmas” — is probably self-explanatory. What’s definitely going to be a surprise is hearing Grimes in an animated iconic role. “People who know Camryn’s work on Y&R will be astounded when they hear her as Mrs. Claus because it sounds nothing like [Mariah],” Powell tells Soap Hub. But there are similarities in the duo’s on and off-screen dynamics. “Mr. and Mrs. Claus are interesting characters because they are a team. Camryn and I very much are, too.”

Working in a New Medium

“In voiceover, it’s actually not that hard to add texture to your voice to sound old,” Grimes says as to how she voiced a woman several years older than she is in real life. “I just wanted to bring kindness, warmth, and generosity to the part.”

Grimes and Powell recorded their roles separately, as is common in the voiceover world. So, who went first? “He went first, and then, I recorded my stuff,” Grimes explains. Adds Powell, “I did a pickup session later so I could hear what Camryn had done. It was really special.”

Camryn’s been acting since she was a little girl but being in a holiday movie that can be seen year after year (not to mention be seen in streaming at any time) is very special — especially as she’s doing it with Powell. “I’ll be able to carry this with me for the rest of my life,” the actress marvels. “‘Oh, yeah, it’s going to play every Christmas!’ And I get to be a small part of that. It’s just such a beautiful story. I think kids and parents alike will have such a fun time watching it.”

Powell and Grimes have already seen the movie, but they say that they’ll be watching it again — maybe right when you are! “It’s like we’re all in a big fireside living room,” he says. “You’ll be watching with us.” Grimes adds with a chuckle, “Oh, there’s no chance that I’m not forcing my whole family to watch this.”

The engaged duo says that they’d like to do more voiceover work together. And how about Powell popping up on Y&R sometime? “Oh, my gosh,” Grimes enthuses, “we’ve talked about that! Brock has asked can I please come on and play a doctor?” At one point, due to COVID, the shows weren’t having many extras or day players on their sets due to safety protocols. “Missy’s husband played Chelsea’s kidnapper,” Grimes recalls of the time Melissa Claire Egan’s husband [Matt Katrosar stepped in to play a man who abducted Chelsea]. “If the opportunity presents itself [for Brock to appear on Y&R], I’d 100% love it!”

“Mickey Saves Christmas” was on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, and Hulu on November 27 and can be streamed on Disney+. Streaming became available on Disney+ on November 28, so you can watch it now if you’re a subscriber.
