Esther Valentine may be a little ‘flighty’ on The Young and the Restless but her portrayer, Kate Linder, is far more grounded — except when she’s working her other role as a flight attendant for United Airlines. The actress recently sat down with Soap Hub to chat travel tips for this week’s Travel Tuesday feature.
Esther has worked as a counselor in the past on Y&R, and in real-life, Kate Linder has some thoughtful advice on how to travel effectively. She has some guidance on how to make your flying experience a smooth one!
Soap Hub: Do you have any packing tips?
Kate Linder: Yes. I think it’s a good idea to roll your clothes instead of laying them out flat. You can fit more into your suitcase that way, and they won’t get as wrinkled. Of course, I’m always in awe of people who can bring with them just the right number of things. [Laughs] I am not one of them! If I’m traveling for work, I tend to take more with me. I want to make sure I have everything.
Soap Hub: What’s another travel tip?
Kate Linder: If people are traveling with medications, they should put them in their carry-on. Don’t check them in your bags in case there’s a delay in getting them. Also, put identification on and in your luggage.
Soap Hub: What’s a good way to make sure your luggage doesn’t get mixed up with someone else’s?
Kate Linder: I’ve also seen people put coverings over their suitcases. That way, their bag is both identifiable, and it’s protected. You can remove the covering and throw it in the washing machine after your trip.
Soap Hub: Some airlines have apps. Should travelers download them to their smartphones?
Kate Linder: Yes. I don’t know if other airlines are doing this, but with United Airlines, you need to have the app if you want to do things like buy food on your flight. It’s a good idea to check in advance if your airline has an app. If you’re on a flight and you want to buy a drink or food, you might need to have that airline’s app. You will with United. It’s a good idea to check in advance. Also, make sure you [have] the latest version of the app.
Soap Hub: Have you ever run into anyone famous when you’ve been flying?
Kate Linder: Yes. One time, Jackie Zeman [Bobbie Spencer, General Hospital] was on my flight. She’s lovely. Also, Danny DeVito [Taxi; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia] was on one of my flights. He told me his mom was a big fan of Y&R.
