Should Fans Demand Classic – And Cancelled – Soaps Back?

 Comments

Production on the four daytime soaps still left on the air, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days Of Our Lives, General Hospital and The Young and the Restless has been halted due to the coronavirus shutdown.

While some shows, like DAYS, film months in advance, others are soon going to start running out of episodes. It’s why YR, BB, and GH have started airing classic episodes on Fridays (and why GH seems to be padding every show with an excessive amount of flashbacks).

Still, nobody knows how long it will be until all the shows have no more new episodes to show. And then what?

Long-Range Classics

How about, instead of one-off classics (and, GH, is it really a classic if you’re showing us episodes from a year or two ago?), why not show us an entire classic storyline? It can even tie in and add texture to current storylines?

For GH, how about the evolution of Jason Quartermain to Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), and his initial introduction to Sonny?

For BB, show us Ridge and Brooke’s (Katherine Kelly Lang) very first romance — and their very first break-up.

For DAYS, how about the romance of Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) to echo Ciara (Victora Konafall) and Ben (Robert Scott Wilson)?

And for YR, high school Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon (Sharon Case) — or even when Victor (Eric Braeden) met Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) the stripper.

Don’t tease us with just one episode, give us the whole twisted tale! Plus, that’s a lot of episodes to keep us entertained.

Back on Air

And then, why not go further? ABC doesn’t just own GH, but also All My Children, and One Life to Live. Give us some of those classic love stories, like Cliff (Peter Bergman) and Nina (Taylor Miller) or Jesse (Darnell Williams) and Angie (Debi Morgan)? Or give us the truly outrageous from OLTL, with Clint (Clint Richie) traveling to the Old West or Viki (Erika Slezak) in Eterna… or Heaven.

There is so much content out there that fans would love to see again — or for the first time. It wouldn’t just fill programming needs, but it would also be cheaper. Really, a win-win for everyone! Which classic storylines — and long-gone shows — would you like to be rerun while we’re all stuck at home?
