Once inside, Seth headed for the kitchen. Laurie climbed on the high-legged chair next to the Formica counter that separated the stove and fridge from the TV and couch that Laurie slept on in the living room area. She watched him unpack the pizzas and slide them in the oven. He opened the bag of carrots, handed Laurie a handful, and said, “Eat these. Then these.” He passed her two children’s multivitamins.

“You’re not the boss of me,” Laurie reminded, crunching down on Fred Flintstone’s powdery head.

Seth stayed all afternoon and, in the evening, he let Laurie watch “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island” before announcing it was bedtime. He said she was too little to stay up past eleven o’clock.

So Laurie went to sleep in Polly’s room, lying in her mother’s King-sized bed, listening to Seth in the living room, watching first the eleven o’clock news, and then the “Star Trek” rerun that came after. She hadn’t asked him to stay, but he knew she wanted him to. It was scary being all alone. Laurie said she was used to it, but she wasn’t, not really. And besides, Laurie suspected Seth didn’t want to go home to his apartment filled with smoke and his mom who was super-nice to everyone, no matter what, any more than Laurie wanted Seth to leave.

She woke up to her name being called and her arm being shaken hard enough to make Laurie’s teeth chatter. She pried her eyes open and rubbed them with both fists before she could clearly see that it was her mother doing the shaking. Polly was standing over Laurie, wearing a silk, white dress without any sleeves and a neckline that was practically a butterfly net, that Laurie was pretty sure she’d never seen before. She was also wearing a diamond ring on her finger that Laurie was absolutely positive she’d never seen before.

“Do I need to get out of bed?” That usually happened when Laurie fell asleep there accidentally and her mother needed to use it. In that case, Laurie was told to go to the living room and watch TV and to, under no circumstances, bother Mama. Or anybody who was with her.

“Yes,” Polly said, pulling back the blanket. “Get up, get dressed, and pack a bag. We’re leaving.”
