On his knees, Seth moved his hands up Lauren’s body, feeling for any broken bones as he called, “Laurie? Say something if you can hear me. Nod, at least.”
Seth thought he felt her twitch ever so slightly in response. He saw the base of her throat flutter as if she’d swallowed hard, and her lips part, albeit with great effort.
“I’m…” she began, voice sluggish, blinking her eyes, trying to clear her vision of both soot and blood.
“Alive,” Seth exhaled in relief. “You’re alive. We can work with that.”
“I’m stuck.”
“I’ll get you out.”
“The baby…”
“The baby is going to be fine.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
“No.” Desperate to make him understand, Lauren forced her eyes open and, with great difficulty, craned her neck, wincing, until she could look him in the face.
“Don’t move. You could cause more damage. Just stay still. I’ll take care of you.”
“The baby,” she corrected him, coughing as she struggled to expel each individual word, horrified to realize that, when she did so, even more blood came out. “Take care of the baby.”
“I’ll take care of you both.”
“If something happens to me, promise you’ll take care of the baby. Promise you won’t let them have her. I told you what they did. Promise that you’ll never, ever let them have her. No matter what.”
