Garrett shrugged, unconcerned. “You really are something, though.” Seriously, how was Lauren supposed to say no to a man like that?
Even if they were in the middle of a conference call with his father and her grandfather. And Garrett’s hand, which had once brushed the inside of her thigh, was casually wandering upwards.
Lauren was in the middle of describing the city’s response to their request for further electrical, water, and sanitation services should they decide to go forward with the massive suburban development they were envisioning, when she felt Garrett’s finger rest gently at the hollow of her throat.
At first, she’d thought he was simply removing a speck of lint, or maybe a stray leaf that had gotten caught at the dip of her blouse. She swatted at it absentmindedly, still focused on the report on her lap.
But then, the finger slowly trailed downward. She twitched in surprise and looked at Garrett questioningly, nearly losing her place in the notes she was reading. He smiled innocently.
And kept right on going. Lauren inhaled sharply, leaning back and locking both elbows tightly behind her to keep from collapsing backward. She met his eyes. But she kept talking all the while.
And she did not, in any way, tell him to stop. Garrett grinned impishly at the implicit permission, getting down on his knees between her legs, politely shifting Lauren’s notes to the side so that she could continue to read them out loud.
Lauren kept talking. She had to over-enunciate each sound now as if trying to make herself understood over a particularly static-impaired connection, lest the purrs of pleasure humming all up and down her body make an inadvertent appearance. She took longer pauses, ostensibly to catch her breath, but really to swallow the moans.
This time, Lauren was forced to cough to cover the gasp he’d triggered, then ask a question she knew the answer to perfectly well – it was a long one – so that she could take advantage of the time to bite down on her lip and fight to remain quiet as Garrett continued…
Lauren tossed one more observation into the speakerphone before their interlude continued. She heard Mr. Ashley’s voice asking for a point of clarification about something she’d said earlier. Still feeling the humming, vibrating buzz down to the tips of her toes and the ends of her fingers, Lauren took a deep, steadying breath and cocked her head to look at Garrett, who’d popped up to sit next to her on the bed.
With an equally innocent smile of her own, she reached for the top button of his slacks, undoing it easily, along with the trio of subsequent clasps. Her last comment was to tell Mr. Ashley and Granddaddy, “I think Garrett can answer that question better than I can.”
