By the time Granddaddy returned to get Lauren, he looked so furious, she didn’t dare say a word. Not even when he hissed Harry’s way, “Gimme your Goddamn document. I’ll sign whatever you need.”

“Nice to see you finally came to your senses.”

Granddaddy snatched the paper he was offered, bending over the table to scribble his signature as if the pen might burst into flame at any moment, then all but threw it back at Harry.

“Your daddy would have never stood for these kinds of tricks.”

“Precisely why he lost this building to you. And why I got it back.”

“Business,” Granddaddy gestured for Lauren to follow him, they were leaving. The guard looked to Harry for instructions. Harry offered an imperceptible nod to indicate they could pass. “Isn’t supposed to be personal.”

“It wasn’t,” Harry said, looking meaningfully at Lauren. “Until you decided to make it that way.”

She began, “Steven -”

“More trouble than he was ever worth, if you ask me.”

She hadn’t asked him. But he’d told her, anyway. Over and over about how worthless and spineless and gutless he thought Steven was. Still, Lauren never imagined how far he’d go to break them up. She suspected Granddaddy had never imagined just how much it would end up costing him, either.

“I know how much that building meant to you.”

“Not half as much as you do,” Granddaddy corrected her brusquely. “I’m the one who brought this on. Only right I should be the one to pay for it.”
