“You won’t get away with this,” Lauren finally blurted out after almost 20 minutes of sitting on a hard, metallic chair, glaring at Harry who, unlike Lauren, took every second that passed without Granddaddy returning to announce he’d straightened everything out and young Mr. Harrison could take his blackmail and shove it, as a better and better sign that he would be getting his way.
Harry slowly turned his head in response to her outburst, looking as if her presence in this situation was not only secondary to the business at hand but an inconvenience, to boot. The little girl should just sit there quietly and let the grown men settle this.
“I’m afraid you’ve confused me with an episode of Scooby-Doo.”
“Granddaddy is not going to trade you his favorite building for -”
“You avoiding a jail term? What’s the matter, don’t think he loves you enough?”
“It won’t come to that. Steven will explain that the drugs weren’t mine and I never used -”
Harry snorted, though, for a minute, he actually looked sorry for her. “Your boyfriend,” he spat the word distastefully. “Is already gone.”
“What are you talking about?”
“His family swept in last night, while you were still rotting in your cell, and cut a deal where the poor, innocent victim gets rehab instead of a sentence, seeing as how you’re the one who seduced him into it.”
“I…” Lauren’s jaw dropped, making it impossible for her to finish the denial struggling to make it out past her suddenly useless lips. “I didn’t….”
“Of course not,” Harry clearly didn’t care either way. “But, the cops believed him, which is why they let precious, wittle Stevie go, and you’re still here.”
“You son of a bitch!” Lauren flew out of her chair, throwing herself bodily at Harry, arm outstretched to smack him across the cheek.
He grabbed her easily by the wrist, jerking Lauren to a painful stop, her palm about a foot from its intended target, his face towering over hers.
When he spoke, however, his tone was perfectly calm, even amused as he asked, “What are you taking this out on me for? I’m not the one who made you hook up with that coward.”
“You’re the one who set me up!”
“To quote Louis Pasteur: Chance favors the prepared mind. I didn’t do anything more than take advantage of a situation you got yourself into all on your own.”
“You called the cops on me!”
Harry let go of her wrist unexpectedly and sent it flopping to Lauren’s side with a loud smack. “Is that what you think?”
“The local cops are in your pocket. You just said so. Hell, you boasted about it.”
“I’ve got friends in high places, true. I’ve worked hard to cultivate them. But all my well-placed friends did was give me a head’s up soon as the name Briggs crossed their docket. If you want to know who sent them your way in the first place, I’d suggest you do your accusing a little closer to home, sweetheart.”
