Grandaddy snatched the document out of his hands, skimming it quickly, mumbling to himself, “All charges dropped…”
“Yes, sir, I’m a thorough man.”
“How -”
“I know people.”
“This what you do all day, boy? Gallop around the countryside, doing good deeds and rescuing fair maidens?”
“Not exactly.”
“What do you want?” Granddaddy asked through clenched teeth.
“A fair trade.”
“What?!” Granddaddy roared.
“The Peace Dollar building.”
“No!” Lauren exclaimed. That site meant more to Granddaddy than any other in his portfolio. Which Harry obviously knew.
“It should have been my father’s in the first place. I’m just here to bring it back into the family.”
“So sure you’ve got me over a barrel?”
“Pretty sure.”
“We’ll see about that.” This time Granddaddy was able to shove Harry aside and open the door.
Lauren attempted to follow him, but the cop standing guard outside put up a palm and gestured for her to get back in – or else.
Granddaddy hesitated, looking over his shoulder.
Harry smiled broadly and made a shooing gesture with his hand which, once again, should have been trifling, but somehow managed to seem ominous. “Don’t worry, Jeremiah, I’ll stay here and keep her company until you get back. And when you’ve realized you’re all out of options, we’ll go ahead and make our deal.”
