“And what sewage pipe did you crawl out of?” Granddaddy snarled.
It had been years since Lauren had seen Ares – “I prefer Harry” – Harrison. Most of their dealings with him and his sister were over the phone and especially in writing, the better to leave a paper trail for the inevitable lawsuits and counter-suits.
Since they’d first met when she was 13, Harry’s hairline, threatening to recede even while he was in his twenties, had lived up to its promise. Or maybe he’d just gotten tired of the neither here nor there look and shaved his head preemptively. In any case, he was completely bald now, making up the deficit with a neatly trimmed, already graying in spots beard that went up the contour of his jawline and over the crooks of his ears. It made his shoulders and his entire torso appear even broader. The tailored cream shirt tucked into a pair of black slacks managed to somehow look a size too small, despite obviously having been custom-made.
“Now, now, Mr. Briggs,” Harry wagged a finger in Granddaddy’s direction. His hands were as large as the rest of him, making what should have been a trivializing gesture feel menacing. It was all Lauren could do to keep herself from taking a cowering step back. “Is that any way to speak to the man who is going to get your poor, little granddaughter out of the mess she’s in?”
“Go to the devil,” Granddaddy advised. “I can take care of this myself.”
“I’m afraid you can’t. You see, Mr. Briggs – may I call you, Jeremiah? Calista does, and it seems so much more civilized.”
“You’ll be calling yourself a dentist to get fitted for a new set of teeth less you get the hell out of here right this minute.”
“You see, Jeremiah, this isn’t Nevada. You’re on the California side of the border. You’re in my territory now. Do you have any idea how many jobs Harrison Habitats provides in a given month to this area?”
“I got sites in the area.”
“A handful here, a handful there. If you include the ones that have been shut down for building code violations and -”
“Don’t think I don’t know who called the inspectors in!”
“It’s still nothing compared to the kind of business we do. Your word doesn’t carry any weight here. Mine does.”
“We’ll see about that.” Granddaddy attempted to brush by Harry on his way towards the door. But, while Granddaddy had a good half a foot on the younger man, his lanky, weathered frame was no match for Harrison’s muscular, football player bulk.
“No need,” Harry checked him easily, blocking the exit and pulling a sheet of paper, folded into thirds, out of his back pants pocket. “I’ve already taken care of everything.”
