Granddaddy didn’t arrive until the next morning. It shouldn’t have taken him that long to get from Lake Tahoe to Palo Alto, even if he’d been driving, though Lauren suspected he’d take the jet. She wondered if she’d been lied to about them contacting him when she asked. She bet they’d waited a couple of hours to force her to spend the night in jail and really put the fear of God into her.
As the evening wore on, more and more people were put in the cell with her. Steven wasn’t one of them. There were a half dozen drunk and disorderly charges, mostly college kids who first made a ton of noise, then sat on the floor, backs to the wall, staring blankly, followed by moaning and vomiting a few hours later.
The car thief who’d come in with them was experienced enough to keep his distance once the puking began. He warned Lauren to do the same. He also warned her not to eat the cheese sandwich they were brought for breakfast unless she wanted to join them.

She shook her head. When Granddaddy said he didn’t want to hear it, Granddaddy meant he didn’t want to hear it. Her trying to explain herself now would only make him angry.
“All right, then, let me talk to the man in charge, see what I can do to make this go away fast as possible.”
“I’m afraid that’s not going to be quite so simple.” The voice from behind made Granddaddy whip around and Lauren to do a double-take.
She’d been expecting the officer who’d arrested her or maybe someone higher up, even a District Attorney. Instead, standing there, looking utterly relaxed and even more pleased with himself was… Ares Harrison.
