The Palo Alto police put Lauren in a holding cell, alone and away from Steven who, the moment the two officers arrived, had gone into full turtle mode. He meekly obeyed whatever they said, not even putting up a token protest when they’d searched his room and found five grams of cocaine.
Five grams, the officer in charge was happy to inform while shifting the plastic bag of powder from hand to hand in order to confirm its weight, automatically boosted its owners into the Possession With Intent to Sell category, which was a felony worth anywhere from two to four years in a federal penitentiary.
Lauren expected Steven to at least speak up then and insist that he’d never, ever sold the stuff, and had no intention of doing so. It was all for his personal use. But Steven didn’t say a word. He let the cops handcuff them both, shove them into a squad car, and pull out – sirens blasting for the entire campus to see and hear.
Once at the station, he numbly recited his name and contact information, allowed himself to be photographed and fingerprinted, and, when they were marched in separate directions towards their cells, didn’t so much as turn his head to look Lauren’s way.
Instead, she was the one left demanding a lawyer – and a phone call – for both of them. She refused to let the arresting officer locking her in leave, calling in his wake, “I’m entitled to call somebody!” (Or so all those cop shows she’d watched on Saturday night with Seth had led her to believe.)
The cop turned around at the end of the hallway, right before the door that led towards the booking area. “Jeremiah Briggs?”
She was startled. “Yes.”
“Don’t worry. It’s all been taken care of.”
