For the next four years, Granddaddy kept his word and proceeded to introduce Lauren to absolutely every aspect of Briggs’ Construction.
He taught her the ins and outs of selecting the right property, choosing materials, drafting plans, hiring a crew, passing inspection, then leasing it out, ensuring a long-term income. And he showed her how all of it could be even sweeter when it meant getting there ahead of your competition.
He also missed no opportunity to demonstrate for Lauren how everyone did business in the same way. When Granddaddy lost a lot he’d had his eye on for years to build a new shopping center, he made sure Lauren knew it was because the Harrisons had blackmailed an accountant into showing them the Briggs’ bid, so they could beat it.
He told her they’d had a residential block rezoned by pulling strings at City Hall, then demolished the entire street – sending all the tenants packing – and turned it into a commercial center. Grandaddy retaliated by dropping a few choice words into the ear of a banker he knew, and insuring their loan for the development was canceled. The Harrisons were forced to put another property up for sale to cover the cost, allowing Grandaddy to swoop in and buy it cheap, using a dummy corporation to make sure the transaction went through before either Calista or Harry were any wiser.
“Should have been mine in the first place,” he reasoned. “I’d have gotten it years ago, if Calista hadn’t convinced my work crew to strike and put me behind schedule at other sites.”
That part of Lauren’s education only came to an end when it was time for her to leave for college. She’d chosen Stanford in Palo Alto, California. Because it was where Seth would be a Senior that fall.
Granddaddy approved. “Boy can keep an eye on you.” Then, as if the thought had just occurred to him, added, “Make sure you invite him for Christmas Eve dinner. Got something important I want to talk to him about.”
