Mr. Briggs plunged his knife into the steak on his plate, sawing it so furiously Lauren expected him to grind through the dining room table. “How was your first day of school?”
“Fine.”
“Teachers give you any trouble?”
“No, sir.”
“Good. No room in the class, my ass. Always room – if you know how to ask.” He took a sip of the brown-colored liquid in his glass. “What about the other kids? They nice to you?”
“They asked…“
“What now?”
“They asked if I was Jeremiah Briggs’… granddaughter?”
“And what did you say to that?”
“I… I said I lived with you now.”
“Bet they were nice to you after.”
“They were nice.”
“I’ll tell you a secret about rich people.” Mr. Briggs leaned forward conspiratorially. “The really rich, if you’re where they are, their schools, their fancy clubs, you name it; they assume you have every right to be there, and they treat you with respect. They’re classy that way, the really rich.
“It’s the wannabes,” he continued. “They’re the ones who need to find other people to treat like trash to make themselves feel better. You remember that man I told you about last night? Harrison? Well, he didn’t start off rich. But, he still had class. Now his kids, they’re embarrassed Daddy made his money with his hands, so they got to go around acting like they’re better than everybody. You stay away from people like them. You stick with the folks who’ve got nothing to prove. You make your friends with them.”
Lauren’s lower lip began to tremble, and she pushed her plate away.
“What?” Mr. Briggs remembered why he usually refrained from dealing with children. “What now? What did I say?”
Lauren sniffled, “They’re not my friends. Seth is my friend.”
Looking flustered in the face of any woman’s tears, even a 6-year-old one’s, Mr. Briggs could only sputter, “And who the hell is Seth?”
