“Where?” Laurie’s own voice rose, too. Only, in her case, it was in terror.
“Oh, Junior is such a world-traveler, he wants to introduce me to some of his favorite places. Doesn’t that sound exciting?”
“And I have to stay here?”
“There,” Polly beamed at Junior. “It’s all set. I told you she’d be thrilled.”
Junior nodded shakily, still in recovery from whatever had gone down between him and his father.
“We’d better hurry,” Polly all but yanked Junior by the arm. “We have so many plans to make!”

Junior’s hands were pink, and they smelled like the same kind of lotion Mama put on her knees and elbows at night.
Lauren tentatively held out her own hand.
Mr. Briggs shook it solemnly. “Guess we’re stuck with each other,” he said, sounding as tired as Junior had looked earlier.
“Sorry,” Lauren managed to croak out.
Jeremiah Briggs shrugged a “what’s done is done” look, straightened up, and returned to his office, closing the door behind him.
