Soap operas have always had a habit of bringing characters back from the dead, but lately characters have appeared–while remaining dead. Are daytime soaps about to have a zombie apocalypse…and do you want to see more?
In recent months, daytime’s own Phoenix has risen and risen and risen–but only in dreams. “Days of Our Lives'” Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) seems truly dead of late, but since he met his maker to Hope’s handgun and rage in January, he’s appeared twice in Chad’s dreams and once in Hope’s. We knew we couldn’t get rid of Stefano THAT fast.
DAYS also featured dead Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) in Jennifer’s dream last month, and Hope’s dream featured Bo (Peter Reckell), Larry (Andrew Massett), and Zack, as well.
Over on “General Hospital” Duke (Ian Buchanan) made a few encore appearances. He first came to Anna when she remained locked in that dock freezer and later danced a farewell tango in her mind on the Nurses’ Ball stage to close out his time in her life.
Now, “The Young and the Restless” has Sage (Kelly Sullivan) haunting a guilt-ridden Sharon (Sharon Case) and there’s no telling what drama that can bring.
Soap Hub asked if you like seeing The Walking Dead invading daytime or if it’s become too much.
Out of about 1,500 votes, 61% of you love seeing your old favorites return–even if they stay dead as a ghost or in someone’s dream. It feels like old home week when this happens and you’ll take your faves any way you can get them.
Another 37% have become sick of this soap trick. You’re used to characters not actually being dead, and occasionally enjoy a little haunting, but lately it’s just become too much. You think the writers are capable of coming up with something more creative and wish they would.
The final 2% just don’t care. You can take the dead or leave them and figure seeing dead people is all part of being a soap fan.
