Breaking News: The Daytime Emmy Boycott Is OVER!

Earlier this year, the four daytime soaps — The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, and The Young and the Restless — threatened to boycott the Daytime Emmys next year if changes weren’t made.

Now, it appears that the soaps are going to enter the annual awards competition after all, but just how many changes are going to be implemented?

In July, the four daytime soaps signed a joint letter to The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences that included a list of concerns and demands after the snafu that resulted in Patrika Darbo having her award taken from her.

(The actress had won in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Daytime Digital Drama category for her role as Mickey on The Bay.)

Because Darbo had appeared in a previous season of The Bay she was ineligible to be in that category. The performer with the next number of highest votes in the category was Jennifer Bassey for her role in Anacostia.

However, Bassey, after initially being told she’d be given the award, was later told she was not going to be given a statuette either.

NATAS had an outside agency conduct an investigation. That investigation found that while mistakes were made, their original findings were going to hold. This left the four soaps to decide whether or not they were going to lift their threat of a boycott and now it appears B&B, DAYS, GH and Y&R will be going to the awards next year.

The quartet of soaps, through a spokesperson, gave a statement to Deadline that read:

“The four daytime dramas are in receipt of NATAS’ internal investigation report and recommendations moving forward. As a group, we are not in agreement with all of the conclusions that NATAS reached….continue reading on the next page —>

“The four daytime dramas are in receipt of NATAS’ internal investigation report and recommendations moving forward. As a group, we are not in agreement with all of the conclusions that NATAS reached. However, in the spirit of working with NATAS and the TV Academy on improving the integrity of the Daytime Emmys, we have lifted our boycott. We look forward to meeting with NATAS to discuss their findings and our concerns in greater detail.”

However, it’s a different story with the Web serials. The Deadline story stated that producers Michael Caruso (Ladies of the Lake), Crystal Chappell (Venice; ex-Carly, Days of Our Lives), and Sonia Blangiardo (Tainted Dreams) aren’t satisfied with the report.

“I have a show that’s eligible this year,” Caruso shared with Deadline, adding, “but I’m not participating because NATAS has not fixed any of the issues in the digital awards categories. Our simple requests have either been ignored or denied, and I do not feel that this judging process is a trustworthy one.”

“I won’t be participating in the future because of [NATAS’] lack of transparency,” Chappell told Deadline.

The 46th Annual Daytime Emmys are set for Sunday, May 5, 2019.
