Soaps are known for portraying mothers who will do anything for their kids… and it appears that some moms and dads are willing to go pretty far in real life, too, including soap opera stars!
NBC News is reporting that actresses Lori Loughlin (Fuller House; ex-Jody, Edge of Night) and Felicity Huffman (Lynette, Desperate Housewives) are among approximately 40 suspects connected to a scheme in which parents paid money to help get their kids into top colleges as athletes, even if the students in question possessed insufficient athleticism.
There were also alleged instances of parents orchestrating higher college entrance exam scores or paying to have someone else take their children’s exams, according to an indictment that was unsealed in Boston. Loughlin and Huffman have been charged with conspiracy to commit both honest services fraud and mail fraud.
Some of the colleges and universities that students were trying to get into (and in some cases, did get into) include UCLA, USC, University of Texas, Yale, and Stanford University. However, there’s no indication that the schools themselves were directly connected to the wrongdoing.
The reported mastermind behind this alleged scheme is Rick Singer, the founder of a for-profit college preparatory business in Newport Beach, CA.
Reportedly, parents gave Singer funds that ranged from $15,000 and $75,000 to have someone take the SAT or ACT exams in place of their children.
According to report papers, roughly $25 million was spent to bribe coaches and university administrators to “designate their children as recruited athletes, or other favored admission categories.”
