Soap operas used to have a mix of people – wealthy and poor, white collar and blue collar, real down to earth folks and possible supermodels. These days, soaps don’t seem to be embracing diversity all around – everyone seems vaguely the same.
Soap Hub wondered if fans like it this way or not. Over 4,000 voted, wanting your voice heard and you had some interesting opinions.
Reflect Society
For 66% of you, soap towns should represent the way people typically look. You appreciate the Zende (Rome Flynn) and the Avant family on The Bold of the Beautiful (BB), Rafe (Galen Gering) and his family, along with Abe’s (James Reynolds) on Days of Our Lives (DOOL).
While you enjoy The Young and the Restless (YR), you are surprised to see that almost everyone on the show is rich as can be or on their way to being so.
Even down and out Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) lucked out with a record deal and having lived with Nikki.
Bigger Than Life
It seems that 33% of you want your characters to be bigger than life like Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) and the Quartermaines of General Hospital (GH). You have no interest in identifying with the characters – it’s a soap opera!
Then Again…
Meanwhile, only 1% chose to write in your own idea of what you like or don’t like on your soaps. Some asked for things to be more normal (wasn’t that an option?!), some chose both, but there were some standouts.
We especially liked the write-in response of no beards—and get a haircut, don’t wear cocktail dresses to work, and the one saying Cane whispering is sickening on Y&R.
