Alec Baldwin, who played TV evangelist Joshua Rush on Knots Landing and Billy on The Doctors, is facing jail time on the charges of involuntary manslaughter. The actor was shooting an independent film when a gun loaded with a real bullet (not a blank) was fired and struck and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Deadline reports that a jury who will decide Baldwin’s fate is set to be chosen starting Tuesday, July 9 in New Mexico. The actor faces a prison sentence of 18 months to three years if found guilty as well as fines approximating $5,000. The trial is set to go from July 10 to July 19, 2024.
Baldwin has denied pulling the trigger of a gun that fired and killed Hutchins on October 21, 2021 on the set of the film Rust located near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Director Joel Souza was wounded in the incident, too.
Over two years ago, in January 2022, Baldwin was originally charged with the film’s former armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. The case against him was lessened and then, initially, dropped all together in April 2022. On January 19, 2024, a Grand Jury indictment charged Baldwin once more. The actor entered a plea of not guilty.
The trial in July won’t be Baldwin’s only time in court. The actor is facing a series of civil cases in both California and New Mexico. Filmmakers completed production on Rust last year in Montana.
