In 1984, the soap, Capitol, hit the airwaves and introduced a new audience to the amazing Julie Adams, who had gained fame as the damsel in distress in the 1954 film, Creature From The Black Lagoon. But these were hardly her only claims to fame.
Adams died on Sunday at the age of 92 according to her son, Mitch Danton, who told The Hollywood Reporter. They also mentioned that “as a publicity stunt, Universal Studios once declared her legs ‘the most perfectly symmetrical in the world’ and insured them for $125,000.”
She was born in Iowa but raised in Arkansas where she caught the acting bug very early in life. She made her debut in a third grade play of “Hansel and Gretel” and at 19, she was crowned ‘Miss Little Rock’ and left home to live with her aunt and uncle in California.
Adams worked as a secretary as she took speech lessons to lose her southern twang. It paid off and her first role was as a starlet in Paramount’s Red, Hot and Blue in 1949. She then won a leading role in the B-grade Western The Dalton Gang.
Adams had a long, prolific career that included such notable co-stars as Elvis Presley (Tickle Me), John Wayne (McQ), Dennis Hopper (The Last Movie), Rock Hudson (The Lawless Breed), and Van Heflin (Wings of the Hawk).
She also had great success on television, with recurring roles on Code Red, Murder She Wrote, and co-starred with screen legend Jimmy Stewart on The Jimmy Stewart Show.
But it was her heartfelt acting that touched soap fans. In her role as Paula Denning, she was the spoiler in the romance of her husband Mark Denning (Ed Nelson) and Clarissa McCandless (General Hospital’s own Helena, Constance Towers). Paula pretended to have agoraphobia as a way to hold onto her husband.
On the personal front, she was married and divorced twice and had two children with her second husband, Ray Danton.
Soap Hub sends condolences to her family, friends, and fans.
