We’ve all seen it happen: Soap vixen one day, heroine the next. Scummy bad guy in the morning, romantic hero by nightfall. Sure, people grow and change and evolve (at least, we hope they do).
But soap opera about-face shifts give fans whiplash! Over 2,000 told us how you really feel about the overnight personality transplant trope:
No Artificial Additives
You’re all about maturity, confirm 64% – as long as it makes sense, story-wise. For instance, it makes sense that, on The Young and the Restless (YR), Mariah (Camryn Grimes), feeling insecure about the state of her relationship with Devon (Bryton James), would feel an attraction to Tessa (Cait Fairbanks).
It makes a lot less sense to have Scott (Daniel Hall), who’s been sniping with Abby (Melissa Ordway) for months, to suddenly offer her supportive dating advice about Zack (Ryan Ashton). Lay your foundation first, writers!
Time To Grow Up!
Nobody stays the same forever, remind 25% of you.
It’s fun to watch characters grow up and change. The Bold and the Beautiful’s (BB) Sally (Courtney Hope) went from scheming design thief to respectable businesswoman (just like her aunt).
That made it easier for fans to recognize what Thomas (Pierson Fode) sees in her. Heck, maybe even General Hospital’s (GH) Ava (Maura West) will reconsider her wicked, wicked ways, now that she can’t use her pretty face to get out of trouble. Fans will be there for that!
Stay With Me, Baby
And then there’s the 8% that demands consistency in their lives. You want Days Of Our Lives’ (DOOL) Nicole (Arianne Zucker) to keep sabotaging her own happiness whenever she gets close to getting everything she’s always wanted.
You also want Y&R’s Victor (Eric Braeden) to always think he’s right, and B&B’s Bill (Don Diamont) to keep making those weird horsie noises. The world is always changing too fast. Let our soaps stay the same.
