With only four soaps left on the air, each year they survive without a cancellation announced feels like a miracle and we all breathe a sigh of relief.
In 2017, as things seemed topsy-turvy in real life, we wondered how soaps would fare. For a while there, it looked like Americans were more interested in what Sean Spicer would say in the White House press room than what was going on in Salem or Genoa City.
Stories faltered for much of the year, but the fall seemed to bring some much-needed life to at least two soaps–Days of Our Lives and General Hospital.
The Young and the Restless also went through changes with a new writing regime headed by the show’s executive producer, Mal Young, and The Bold and the Beautiful shocked us all over the summer by reviving Sheila Carter.
With ratings on the rise for DAYS and GH, but weeks of ups and downs for Y&R and B&B, Soap Hub asked your hopes for soaps in 2018 and here’s what more than 3,000 of you think.
Good Times Are Coming
Yes, storylines are looking up and we see 2018 coming in with a bang and keeping us interested throughout say a whopping 73% of you.
You love the change in DAYS that’s brought Will back, as well as family and character-driven stories that pull at your heart.
At General Hospital, you can’t wait to learn more about Drew, see who Sam chooses, and learn who really fathered Nathan. Y&R also keeps you guessing when Christian’s paternity will come out and B&B has you wondering if Steffy and Liam’s marriage can survive her one night with his father.
Just Not Sure
Another 24% of you think things are meh right now on soaps. You keep watching because they are there, but shows are not thrilling you and you hope for a better 2018.
You Give Up
The final 4% seem ready to give up. Every year becomes more and more disappointing and your soaps seem unrecognizable. You don’t see things getting much better in the new year.
