She’s been dumped by Finn. He’s no longer pining over Nina. For the first time in a long time, both Valentin and Anna find themselves totally unattached. The circumstances are perfect and why General Hospital should explore this unique duo.
On a cerebral level, there are no two characters more perfectly suited for one another than Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart). They’re wired the same way. They’re strong-willed and persistent. They think alike, usually 10 steps ahead of everyone else. Their brains are constantly churning, contemplating, and concocting plans.
Look at the way they joined forces to stop Maxie’s (Kirsten Storms) and Peter’s (Wes Ramsey) wedding. Granted, their plot went awry, but they quickly came up with a new one. They’re committed to bringing Peter down. They’re both on the same page and determined to use whatever means necessary to do so – be them fair or foul.
Not that things have always been so simpatico between the twosome. Anna and Valentin have a long complicated past. They were both recruited by the WSB at the same time, at which point Valentin’s body was distorted by scoliosis and he suffered from a pronounced stutter.
While Valentin fell head-over-heels for Anna, she rebuffed him when he mustered up the courage to kiss her. The rejection sent Valentin on a dark path, joining the rival DVX as a mercenary. Anna, too, would eventually defect to the DVX and work as a double agent.
When they met up in Port Charles, years later, Anna didn’t even recognize her former co-worker. Valentin had had surgery and conquered his speech impediment. They were instant foes due to Valentin’s destructive goals and his disdain for how she hurt him. But, in time, they made peace and reconnected, realizing they’d both made bad choices and led imperfect lives. As a result, they understood one another as few others could.
It took decades, but they finally came to respect one another, and, in the process, became profound friends. Something unique developed between them. They realized they could trust and confide in each other, something they weren’t able to do with their significant others. Anna constantly kept her WSB maneuverings and suspicions about Peter’s duplicity from Finn, and Valentin kept secrets from Nina — sabotaging both their relationships.
Together, Anna and Valentin have discovered they can be their true selves. They never judge one another and often adopt the same “the ends justify the means” mentality. They’ve come to realize that they can count on each other when there’s a job to be done. They’re both crafty, slick, and sly; two-of-a-kind in so many ways. That’s why the time has never been better for the General Hospital writers to explore them as a bona fide couple. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
