It’s a huge storyline gamble — pairing Carly’s amnesiac husband, Sonny, with Jax’s bitter ex, Nina. Yet, General Hospital is betting on it big time. But how far is the soap willing to take this taboo duo?
General Hospital Tries Something New
Despite loathing Carly (Laura Wright), the woman she blames for her daughter Nelle’s (Chloe Lanier) death, Nina (Cynthia Watros) was ready to do the right thing when she discovered her nemesis’s “dead” husband alive at the Tan-O in Nixon Falls. She immediately phoned Carly, ready to reveal all.
But when Carly started railing at her about their grandson, Wiley, Nina decided to put her good deed on hold. “You made your bed, now you can lie in it — alone,” she snapped, realizing that keeping mum was the ultimate payback and what snarky Carly deserved.
Getting to Know You
Since that ill-fated phone call, Nina’s been wrestling with her conscience, while getting to know – and like Sonny (Maurice Benard), who’s now going by “Mike.” They’ve forged a sweet friendship, done a little flirting, and even shared a dance.
It’s clear “Smike” is smitten with the new blonde in his life, but that’s because he doesn’t remember the old one, his wife Carly. Meanwhile, Phyllis (Joyce Guy), who’s totally oblivious to Nina’s duplicity, has been encouraging the pairing, believing it’s good for both of them.
How Far Is Too Far?
While Nina’s been keeping a respectable distance between her and “Smike,” largely because she knows the truth about his identity, she remains in a vulnerable place. Her breakup with Jax (Ingo Rademacher) has left her broken-hearted and angry. Add her wrath towards Carly to the mix, and it could totally hamper her judgment moving forward.
What happens if “Smike” makes a romantic move on her in the near future? Would Nina respond with a kiss, knowing she’s getting involved with another woman’s husband and a man Jax has loathed for years?
The General Hospital writers will have to think long and hard before their next move because going so far as to put Nina in “Smike’s” bed would totally alienate longtime Sonny and Carly fans. Plus, it would ruin all the positive strides Nina has made over the past few years. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
