Many daytime stars include health-conscious posts in their social media accounts. General Hospital actor Cameron Mathison, who plays Drew, does, as well, however, he also has a stand-alone Instagram account — All Health 360 — which is solely devoted to health and wellness.
Cameron Mathison has been a fan favorite since his 1998 debut as Ryan Lavery on All My Children. Today, the actor is in tip-top shape as GH’s Drew. He spoke to Soap Hub for this week’s installment of Wellness Wednesday on a key component of every health and fitness plan – making sure there’s time to pay proper attention to one’s goals.
“It’s all about thinking ahead and scheduling,” Mathison shares with Soap Hub. “I play out what day I want to work out what body part at the beginning of the week or even at the end of the previous week.”
Mathison says that he will look over his GH schedule and then see where he can fit in his workouts. “If I have a two-episode day, I am not working out,” he says. “There’s too much going on. I’m open to change, adapting, and coordinating with [my wife] Vanessa. We align what our goals are. We let each other know what days we plan on working out and coordinate with doctor’s appointments, [our] kids’ pickups, and grocery store runs.”
Recently, Mathison had a couple of days off from work but it’s not just about having a lighter work week that will help him figure out when he’s going to hit the gym. He listens to his body. “I gave myself permission to take four days off,” he says as he prepared to take a quick road trip. “There was a day when I would have fit in my workout in the middle of a road trip. And there’s nothing wrong with that but I also know the importance of scheduling accordingly. I know when I get to my destination, I’ll get my workout in.”
Mathison revealed in the spring of 2019 that he was battling kidney cancer and credits his recovery, in no small part, to a lifelong commitment to wellness. “Paying attention to my body and how I feel literally saved my life,” the actor shared. “I had a slow-growing kidney cancer for years that likely would have spread if it wasn’t for my healthy lifestyle and my persistence to be the best advocate for my own health. The general health of our population has been decreasing year after year for many reasons, but lack of a proper diet is likely at the top of the list.”
In October, Mathison shared a wellness update with his followers, letting folks know that he had received a clean bill of health. “Thank you for all of the well wishes…” he shared. “I can’t tell you how much it means.”
On his All Health 360 Instagram page, which he launched in May 2020, Cameron Mathison posts some helpful workout tips – including how he helps stay ready for scenes in which Drew’s going to go shirtless. “When I used to do shirtless scenes on AMC, I would sneak in a set of push-ups behind a sofa or backstage to get a last-minute pump…” he says. “Changing my hand position or raising my feet on a chair helps target the whole chest and be quite a full chest workout.”
