The General Hospital writers have given Nicholas Alexander Chavez some solid scripts to perform and the actor has shown his appreciation by delivering award-winning caliber performances on a consistent basis. Once again, Chavez is the choice for Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week for GH.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez

Chavez has brought complexity and depth to his role as alienated Spencer Cassadine since his debut on GH less than a year ago. When his character showed up at Ava’s art gallery, he encountered Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali, who has hit the ground running as Trina). She’s fighting charges that she purposely recorded her friends Cameron Webber (William Lipton) and Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) having sex and then proceeded to distribute said R-rated footage.

Spencer knows that Trina is innocent and that calculating Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl) is responsible. However, Spencer isn’t sharing that information with Trina just yet — we’re not 100% sure why but that choice makes Chavez’s performances all the more interesting. We’re compelled to watch his scenes with Trina, hoping in each one he’ll open up. Actually, he recently did. We got to hear him say that he was falling in love with Trina. (Swoon!)

Alas/fortunately, that was merely a fantasy sequence. But that didn’t dampen the passion Chavez brought to the scenes. While it would have been more satisfying to hear Spencer say those words truly, the fact that he didn’t mean it, well, we’re just going to stay tuned until he voices his feelings in reality.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez showed more diversity in his work when Spencer went to visit his pal (frenemy) Cameron. At first, Cameron had no interest in hearing what Spencer had to say. But the Cassadine heir got Cameron to agree to hear him out. After being blasted by Cameron (the terrific William Lipton), Spencer blurted out the truth with passion, “I know that Esme did it! I know that she framed Trina. And now, it is my turn to try to save her!”

Spencer let Cameron know that his ultimate goal was to make sure Trina was found innocent. But he can’t tell her what he’s going to do to make that happen and Spencer also informed Cameron that Joss can’t know either! An incredulous Cameron said he couldn’t tell whether Spencer’s plan was noble or idiotic. We agree but we can say this — Spencer cares about Trina. And we can’t wait to see what Nicholas Alexander Chavez does as Spencer next to make sure that Trina is exonerated!

Honorable mention: Cynthia Watros’s Nina played appropriately terrified when two armed criminals burst into Charlie’s and demanded money and valuables. We saw Nina emotionally grabbing her treasured necklace as she feared the bad guys would take the piece of jewelry that ties her to her daughter. After Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Brando (Johnny Wactor) overtook the thugs, we couldn’t help but chuckle when Nina quickly picked up a stray gun, embodying Kelly Garrett in the process, as she firmly held the pistol against the crooks.
