Nicholas Alexander Chavez continues to prove why he’s not only one of Daytime TV’s best young actors but also among all actors period. For the General Hospital star’s performance for Spencer Cassadine on the anniversary of his mother’s death, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Chavez.
Nicholas Alexander Chavez – Performer of the Week
GH drew on the anniversary of Courtney Matthews‘s (Alicia Leigh-Willis) death to give Nicholas Alexander Chavez new levels to play as Spencer emotionally lamented not only her loss but his inability to leave flowers on her grave due to his incarceration. Nicholas’ pain and frustration only grew.
Spencer grew visibly agitated when sharing his feelings with Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl) at Spring Ridge. (Sorry, Esme, you don’t seem to have the calming influence on Spencer that Trina does!) Chavez added physicality to his scenes as a restless Spencer became agitated, causing a nearby guard to grow extra alert. Chavez reminded viewers how charming Spencer can be when he deftly explained to Esme that he gave Trina (Sydney Mikayla) a book as a gift because it was easier than writing a thank you note (really?) and that it was only a coincidence that Trina received the tome on Valentine’s Day. (Hey, Esme, Spencer might have a bridge for you to buy on Cassadine island!)
Esme’s nobody’s fool but Spence, as she calls him, was so convincing how could she not believe him? Spencer continued to use his charm by asking Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), his next visitor, to spring him from Spring Ridge so that he could visit his mother’s grave. Initially, Victor refused, citing he had no desire to either extend Spencer’s sentence should he be caught or join him as a fellow prisoner.
Next, Nicholas Alexander Chavez dug in deep to his character and pushed for a furlough for Spencer. “Just because my mother died hours after me being born doesn’t mean I don’t miss her. Every. Single. Day,” Spencer said. “There must be something you can do.”
How could Victor say no? We later saw Spencer, flowers at hand, at his mother’s grave. Noting the other flowers present, he said shared his contentment that she wasn’t alone that day. Then, Trina, wondering why Spencer wasn’t at Spring Ridge, appeared. This sets the stage for more drama the following week from Chavez and Mikayla. We can’t wait to see how Spencer reacts to Trina knowing he’s stepped outside the law once more. Bravo to Nicholas Alexander Chavez for adding yet another dimension to Spencer Cassadine.
