Budgets for blowout soap weddings may not exist anymore but as long as the bride leads with her heart and brings the emotion – as Olivia Quartermaine did when she renewed her vows to Ned Quartermaine — they’re really not needed. Soap Hub is bestowing Performer of the Week for General Hospital honors on Lisa LoCicero for her heartfelt portrayer of Olivia.
Ned (Wally Kurth) and Olivia went through a series of ups and downs over the last year or so including but not limited to his infidelity with Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and her galivanting off to Europe with Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) for a spy caper. Recently, Ned and Olivia bonded over their mutual love for their son Leo (Easton Rocket Sweda) and realized they were meant to be together. They invited family and friends to witness their vow renewal at the Quartermaine mansion.
Kudos to GH for assembling quite the crowd in Monica Quartermaine’s (Leslie Charleson) living room for the ceremony. The varied guest list included but was not limited to the groom’s mother Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), his daughter Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton), and the bride’s sons Leo and Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna). Appropriately, Laura Collins (Genie Francis), the mayor of Port Charles, officiated the ceremony (and did so beautifully, we might add).
As Olivia prepared to read her vows, she began reciting Ned’s name four times, causing him to express faux concern. “It’s all good, I promise,” Olivia said. Actually, what followed was far more than good. Lisa LoCicero brought love, respect, warmth, humor, and affection to the words she proceeded to speak.
“I promise to love you, cherish you, and honor and keep you for the rest of our lives,” Olivia stated. “We will celebrate together. We will watch movies and eat Chinese food together. We will raise our son together.
“When I look into my future and I see you and the three of us and all of you,” Olivia said looking out at the assembled guests, “I just cannot believe how blessed I am.”
Next, it was Ned’s turn to talk. She playfully called her groom a “copycat” and when Ned referenced that they’d be singing more duets in the future as they have done at the Nurses Ball, Olivia quipped that her contributions were “slightly off-key.” Ned admonished Olivia not to put herself down. “That’s my wife you’re talking about,” he said.
Through tears of joy, as the ceremony concluded, Olivia said, “You better kiss me if you know what’s good for you.” Later, Monica summed things up nicely when she told Ned that some couples are meant for the long haul citing other Quartermaine couples including Edward (David Lewis; John Ingle) and Lila (Anna Lee) and herself and Alan (Stuart Damon).
Honorable Mention: Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) didn’t get married alone. Wally Kurth reminded viewers why he’s such a great leading man in this vow renewal ceremony episode. He plays Ned Quartermaine as a standup, caring man. He’s someone who’s not afraid to admit his mistakes. Tracy encouraged Ned to protect his family – it’s clear that Ned already does that with his children and his wife. It’s easy to see why Olivia has fallen for this terrific guy. It’s easy to count Ned and Olivia among these fan-favorite duos given the clear love we see between them.
