Nina Reeves may have been found innocent of swiping Sonny Corinthos’ (Mike’s) identity on General Hospital, but the recent courtroom scenes proved her portrayer, Cynthia Watros, is ‘guilty’ of being one of daytime’s best performers! For her compelling work as an accused woman in love, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Watros.

Cynthia Watros – Performer of the Week

Daytime Emmy-winner Cynthia Watros didn’t have to take the witness stand as Nina Reeves in order to turn out a compelling series of performances as her character faced jail time for remaining silent about Sonny being alive. (Hey, Carly! Remember she tried to tell you but you hung up on her?)

Nina once thought of Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) as her daughter and she had no desire to see her attorney Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner – more on him later) put her in an uncomfortable position as Willow had information that got Nina’s case dismissed. It was clear by seeing the pain in Nina’s eyes that she was more concerned about Willow — and ultimately, Sonny — than she was about her own freedom. As Nina and ‘Mike’s’ mutual feelings were revealed in the courtroom, Nina quietly shook her head as if to say, “This isn’t what I wanted to have happen.”

Just when Nina (Cynthia Watros) thought things couldn’t get worse, the judge called Sonny to the stand. Tears filled Nina’s eyes with disbelief, sorrow, and relief when Sonny admitted under oath both that he and Nina fell in love while in Nixon Falls and also, he did not feel the victim of a crime.

Watros is the kind of actress that all eyes fall upon even when she doesn’t have dialogue. Nina’s compassionate but she’s nobody’s victim. When Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) read Nina the riot act, Nina fired back, “I wasn’t the one bent on revenge, Michael!” She added noted that if Michael had minded his own business then her relationship with Sonny/Mike never would have come out.

Willow jumped to Michael’s defense and fired off how she saw things – Michael wanted justice and not revenge. Free from the judge’s ears, Nina turned things around on Willow, who insisted she had to tell the truth as she was under oath. “Well, God forbid you get down in the mud with the rest of us,” Nina said. “Congratulations, Willow. You told the truth – and you devastated that family you claim to love in the process.”

Ironically, Michael’s actions have lit the fuse that may end up detonating his parents’ marriage, paving the way for Nina and Mike Sonny to explore in Port Charles what they had in Nixon Falls.

Honorable Mention: Cynthia Watros wasn’t the only key player in the courtroom scenes. Kin Shriner proved that attorney Scotty Baldwin is the ‘Columbo’ of soap opera lawyers. He’s relentless when it comes to getting his clients off. After his victory, viewers saw Scotty’s more vulnerable side in scenes with his late son Franco’s family. Scotty gently advised widowed Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) to do what Franco would have wanted – live her life. And what uncle figure hasn’t wowed a child with a gift of a $5 bill as Scotty did with Violet Finn (Jophielle Love)? Scotty’s got a heart but his secret is safe with Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) — and us, too. Let’s hope we see more of Shriner and Scotty in 2022.
