On paper, Gladys Corbin is an annoying human being. However, Bonnie Burroughs infuses her General Hospital alter-ego with such exasperating bravado, we can’t help but love her — mostly, because we have no idea what she’s going to do next. Soap Hub is bestowing GH Performer of the Week honors on Burroughs who has “burrowed” her way into our hearts!
We can thank Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) for putting Gladys in the driver’s seat. She said out loud she dreads the day when Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) finds out that Bailey isn’t his daughter and Gladys got a recording of that. While she doesn’t have all the info, she’s got enough to know that she feels confident enough to do some online shopping at Brook Lynn’s expense. Burroughs plays it all as if Gladys has won the lottery and given the potency of the secret in question, she kind of has.
Burroughs doesn’t exactly bring subtlety to Gladys so, when she prances around the middle of the Metro Court in a bathrobe, announcing that she’s enjoying the hotel’s spa services, she tries everyone’s last nerve. Her son Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) and her boss Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) are especially aghast at Bonnie’s brazen attitude.
Gladys blurted out that she didn’t need to take orders from someone who should be out getting a paternity test. Of course, she was referring to Brook Lynn but because she said this to a pregnant Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) Brando jumped to the defense of his baby mama. Gladys realized her faux pas but was smart enough to keep quiet about what she truly meant so she could hang onto her secret.
Gladys decided to visit a hospitalized Valentin to better position herself. She ran into Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth) and the two quickly sized each other up. Austin gave Gladys directions to Valentin’s room and cracked a pun about the stuffed animal Gladys was carrying saying it was “paws-itively” his pleasure. Bonnie Burroughs plays Gladys as a woman who thinks she’s crafty but is she? She didn’t quite get Austin’s pun, reminding viewers that she’s both focused and unaware at the same time — a potentially troubling combination.
Next, Gladys bulldozed her way into Valentin’s room. Initially, Valentin was mildly amused by his unlikely visitor. Soon, he wanted her gone. “Why are you here?” he queried. She tried to bond with him over the fact that they’d both been shot. Valentin’s patience wore thin and he asked her to go so he could rest. Then, tone-deaf Gladys took a seat and continued to perplex her captive audience. We hope Gladys sticks around for quite some time. Bonnie Burroughs brings a bold charm to her role. She’s unpredictable, a bit greedy, and she’s sitting on a huge secret. We can’t wait to see what Gladys does next!
