For years, General Hospital’s Anna Devane, played by Daytime Emmy winner Finola Hughes, was stalked by creepy Cesar Faison (Anders Hove). Now, Anna is trying to reign in Cesar’s son, Peter (Wes Ramsey), and in order to do that she’s tapping into all different parts of her personality.
Finola Hughes — Performer of the Week
One minute, she’s a threatening super-spy, the next, she’s a caring aunt, hoping to reach whatever humanity may still exist in Peter. (Alas, there’s none to be found.) For turning in a series of powerful performances showing just how passionate and resourceful Anna can be, Soap Hub is bestowing Performer of the Week honors for GH on Finola Hughes.
The week started off with Anna calmly inviting Peter into her home and then tasing him into submission so that she and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) could get him under their control and away from Maxie (Kirsten Storms).
Her plan was interrupted by Finn (Michael Easton), who came by to pick up one of his daughter Violet’s (Jophielle Love) favorite stuffed animals. He shared with Anna that Chase is his son, prompting Anna to put her plan to grill Peter on hold while she supportively listened to Finn talk about the paternity twist. Never let it be said that Anna doesn’t make time for those she truly cares about.
Unfortunately, Peter got the upper hand by threatening not Anna or Valentin directly, but rather their loved ones. This prompted Anna to lose control. Peter’s threat brought memories of Faison’s (Anders Hove) schemes back to Anna.
Faison is dead and buried, but the impact he made on Anna’s life was evident by her reaction — and appreciated by longtime viewers who watched it all unfold so long ago onscreen.
She urgently tracked down Finn to warn him that Peter might strike out at him. It was clear to see that there’s still a lot of love between this formerly engaged duo. Her mood quickly shifted to deep concern after Finn told her that Chase (Josh Swickard) had gotten sick after a family dinner.
Realizing that Peter had the cure for Chase’s poisoning, Anna agreed to his demands. She raced to the hospital but wasn’t sure if Finn even wanted her around. Anna isn’t directly responsible, of course, for Chase’s poisoning however, she couldn’t help but feel guilty.
Anna put her heart on her sleeve when Valentin and Peter arrived at the hospital. She vowed to let Maxie make up her mind on her own, but Peter wasn’t buying his “auntie’s” act.
Drama for Anna continued to the end of the week when she and Valentin checked in with Carly (Laura Wright). The two women were at odds – Carly wanted Anna to help her get Jason out of jail, but Anna ordered Carly to hold off while she and Valentin deal with Peter.
Carly shrugged that she couldn’t promise to be passive. Anna bluntly said then both she (Carly) and Peter will have blood on their hands, pointing out to Carly that Peter can live with it – can you?
Peter may hold all the cards, but Anna is known for getting out of tough situations. She and Valentin ran into Martin (Michael E. Knight) and Cyrus (Jeff Kober) at the Port Charles Grill.
Anna and Cyrus made formal introductions to one another; Anna, with a knowing smile, confided in Valentin that she knew what her next move was going to be. Anna theorized that the same tactics that brought Faison down could possibly be applied to Peter!
The writers have loaded Anna’s playbook with a lot of emotions – the love she still has for Finn, her devotion to protecting her loved ones, and so much more. Finola Hughes always embraces the opportunities she’s given with devotion and purpose. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
