Truth be told, General Hospital’s Finola Hughes could well be awarded Performer of the Week honors each and every time she appears on the screen. Her mere presence assures viewers that they’re in for a treat…even when her character is making moves that don’t exactly endear her to them.
Performer Of The Week: Finola Hughes
But fans of the actress, and of Anna Devane, were no doubt delighted by the recent turn of events that have seen the super-spy finally remove her rose-tinted glasses and actually accept the fact that Peter’s (Wes Ramsey) claims of redemption were patently false.
And that wake-up call came courtesy of a harsh truth-bearing Valentin (James Patrick Stuart). Not only did he tell Anna about Peter’s confession to hiring the assassin that targeted Franco (Roger Howarth) and Andre Maddox (Anthony Montgomery), but he also helped her to connect Peter and Drew Cain’s mysterious death.
Yes, not only was her nephew and surrogate son responsible for two attempted murders, but he did succeed in robbing Emily Scout of her father.
In the immediate aftermath of her schooling, Hughes pitch-perfectly encapsulated Anna’s horror, and her immense guilt, and that tiny sliver of hope she still possessed, deep down inside, that Peter would atone if given the chance.
So she offered it to him. And much to her disappointment, not only did Peter not own up to his actions, but he also leaned on her to destroy evidence that would link him to the hired gun.
Following that familial confrontation, Hughes took great pains to ensure that Anna’s gamete of emotions – disgust, and regret, and self-recrimination – were all prominently telegraphed via stooped posture and shed tears.
But even in the throes of defeat, Anna remained doggedly determined to right her past wrongs..and to do it in a way that she sees fit. As she explained to Valentin, “I finally get it. Peter’s not the man I thought he was. He’s beyond our help…It’s up to us, now, to make sure that Peter never hurts anyone else ever again.” General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC.
