Sam and Carly rank supreme among General Hospital’s (GH) crop of leading ladies. They’re both tough feisty broads with dubious pasts, who just happen to be the two most important women in Sonny and Jason’s lives.
How does the duo stack up against one another? Here are three reasons why Carly (Laura Wright) and Sam (Kelly Monaco) are BOTH tops.
Team Carly
The role of Carly is so powerful that it has evoked nine Daytime Emmy Award nominations by three different actresses — Wright, Tamara Braun, and Sarah Brown — in three different categories.
Brown took home gold for Outstanding Younger Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress, while Wright won Outstanding Lead Actress, which Braun was also nominated for (she ended up winning in supporting — but as Ava on Days of Our Lives).
When it comes to being a fierce mama bear, nobody holds a candle to Carly. She’ll do anything to protect her children and heaven help the person who messes with them.
She saw Michael, Morgan, and Josslyn through major medical traumas, willing their triumphs. And, she went after Ava (Maura West) full throttle when she learned the mobster tampered with Morgan’s (Brian Craig) bipolar meds.
There’s no truer friend than Carly. Just ask Jason (Steve Burton/Billy Miller). The pair have a relationship with no boundaries that has withstood death and resurrection. When she’s in your corner, she’s in your corner – no questions asked and damn the legalities.
Team Sam
Some might say Carly is tough as nails, but the truth is Sam is even tougher. She’s survived being kidnapped, stabbed, shot, and a limousine explosion.
Heck, she even fought off a crazed Olivia Jerome while she was 8-months pregnant and ended up giving birth to daughter Scout in a culvert off the footbridge in the dead of winter.
The former con-artist-turned-PI has proven she can mix it up with the big boys and hold her own. She’s the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider of daytime. She’s been absolutely fearless going head-to-head with mobsters, crazed killers like Franco, and even the evil Helena Cassadine.
In the stand-by-your-man department, Sam ranks #1. While you need a scorecard to keep track of Carly and Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) breakups and makeups, Sam has pretty much been devoted to Jason since they first fell for each other.
Granted, she had a short fling with Lucky, but that was prompted by Jason’s affair with Elizabeth. Since then, she has been the epitome of loyal to her true love.
