Steve Burton’s been back on the job as General Hospital’s Jason Morgan for two weeks. The show’s writers have wasted no time explaining where he’s been and why he’s back. How has the action-packed story played out so far? Here’s what’s right and what’s wrong about Jason’s return.
Having Jason (Steve Burton) reach out to Carly (Laura Wright, who answers your questions here) first made total sense. She’s the one person Jason knows he can always count on, and she was there for him, no questions asked. She bandaged his bullet wound and ran interference when the cops showed up at her door looking for Jason.
After Anna (Finola Hughes) and Jagger (Adam Harrington — do you know THIS about him?) presented their case – there was footage of Jason and an accomplice pointing their guns at Sonny (Maurice Benard, who recently discussed Ava and Sonny’s bond) and speculation that Jason shot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) – Carly was unfazed. She knew, instinctively, the circumstantial evidence was dead wrong.
Having Danny (Asher Jaren Antonyzyn) discover Jason at the Quartermaine boathouse was a great twist and an unexpected father-and-son reunion. So, too, was having Danny make Jason swear on something important that he didn’t shoot Dante. When Jason swore on Danny’s life, the boy knew he was innocent and ready to help him at all costs, even agreeing to keep the news from his mother, Sam (Kelly Monaco).
Once Danny summoned Michael (Chad Duell), who in turn summoned Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) for help, the show’s writers had Jason’s care team in place. Michael would keep him safely hidden, while Willow nursed him back to health. They were all part of Team Jason, the group that will prove triumphant in the end, along with one other intriguing person, Anna. After hearing Jason’s 9-1-1 call for help to save Dante, she couldn’t shake the feeling in her gut that something was off.
What has happened to Sam (Kelly Monaco), the real Sam who once loved Jason from the depths of her soul? Albeit caught between a rock and a hard place – she’s Jason’s ex-wife and Dante’s girlfriend – Sam seems to have totally turned her back on her former soulmate. The beloved Sam of old would have known that Jason didn’t shoot Sonny’s son. She would have been jumping to his defense and proclaiming his innocence. Sadly, new Sam seems convinced that Jason is guilty. And how cold was it when she told Carly that if she saw Jason again to “call the police?”
Like Sam, Sonny is caught in a difficult position, too. Jason’s his “brother,” and Dante is his son. He’s also dealing with a personal life that’s in shambles, so his judgment is not at its all-time best. Regardless, how could Sonny doubt Jason so easily? Hasn’t Jason proven his devotion and loyalty to Sonny for decades? It’s uncharacteristic of Sonny to suddenly turn his back on Jason and consider the absolute worst about him.
One can only hope that Sam and Sonny eventually realize the error of their ways and start believing in Jason again. He’s played a huge role in both their lives and deserves better. Once the truth about Jason’s cryptic mission comes out, it can start with a big apology from both of them.
