This week was what General Hospital viewers have been waiting for since last December — the return of Sonny Corinthos to his beloved family in Port Charles. It had the potential of being epic, as his resurrection coincided with the wedding of his ‘widow’ Carly Corinthos and his best friend, Jason Morgan. Would he find them in bed? Would he completely lose it? Would it lead to death and destruction?
General Hospital Report Card: Sonny Comes Home
Nope. No fireworks. No yelling. And why would there be, since he simply walked in on Carly (Laura Wright) and Jason (Steve Burton) talking (well, she was about to start undressing him but hadn’t gotten past touching a sleeve). Carly fainted but then Jason started recapping what’s been happening and then revealed the shocking news — they got married.
It was a more understanding Sonny, perhaps influenced by his until-a-few-hours-ago-persona of Mike, who even gave them kudos for their genius move to keep the family safe. You read that right — he wasn’t upset that they married. He understood and applauded their ingenuity. Uh-huh. Okay. Sure.
Of course, there is a segment of the General Hospital audience who is thrilled by this mature reaction and set-up, keeping the friendship of the threesome intact and dare we say…precious. Also, the acting from all three was spot-on, their chemistry is still fantastic. But for those who actually want to see drama — in their daytime drama — this development was not only a boring choice, it was a squandered opportunity that made us scratch our heads as to why this story was even penned.
This was the perfect opportunity to really shake things up with these three. When Carly (then Sarah Joy Brown) and Sonny first slept together, Jason was devastated. This was a chance to have a little (unintentional) payback of Sonny walking in on them in bed together. There would have been consequences to his having disappeared for nine months. Oh, how life would have changed, right? Instead, things can return to how they were. So why bother? That’s not how soaps work!
So Sonny/Mike exchanged love declarations but didn’t have sex with Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros); Carly and Jason exchanged love declarations but didn’t have sex either so the only ones who got screwed in all of this were the viewers — out of having anything interesting come out of all of this. Grade: F — for failing our high expectations of the show that gave us clink-boom.
