Nurses Ball Preview: Will Lucy Be Caught Half-Naked Once Again?

Your favorite Port Charles characters are going to hit the red carpet now that the Nurses Ball is happening on General Hospital. Over the years, there’s been a funny tradition of Lucy Coe somehow ending up semi-nude during the ball. Will that happen again?

Lynn Herring (Lucy) spoke to TV Insider about this possibility along with her thoughts on Nurses Ball episodes from past years.

“We decided last year it was a little bit inappropriate to do that,” the actress says of Lucy being caught at a “clothing challenged” moment. “It didn’t fit with the staging. This year, there’s one little beat that’s a throwback to that. I think the audience will love it!”

As in past years, the first day of the Nurses Ball will feature GH characters walking the red carpet, which sets up the talent portion starting on Monday, May 20.

This is the 25th anniversary of the Nurses Ball, which was founded in 1994 as a way to shine a light on HIV/AIDS awareness and research. (The Nurses Ball was on hiatus from 2001 to 2013, but it’s been back for every year ever since!)

Grey’s Anatomy star, Emmy-winning actress Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), will play Sydney Val Jean, Crimson magazine’s fashion editor and red carpet reporter, who interviews Port Charles luminaries as they make their way into the ball.

When the Nurses Ball began, budgets were bigger and there was more time to perfect musical acts and shoot episodes. Today, soaps are facing economic realities that result in getting the same job done for less.

“You can never go back and recreate exactly what you had,” Herring notes, “but you can honor it and make it up to date. I love the new [Nurses Balls] we’ve done and I’ve loved participating in them!”

The most important aspect of these episodes is that the mission of the Nurses Ball — raising awareness about HIV/AIDS Awareness — is not ignored. “The writers have done brilliant speeches for Lucy saying that we’re not done yet and to not give up the fight,” Herring notes. “I love that they’ve done that.”
