Why THIS Person Should Take Over As Drew On General Hospital

Now that Billy Miller has officially announced he’s leaving General Hospital, the future of his character, Drew, seems to be in jeopardy. Should they recast? Should he be written out? Leaving town seems a bit unlikely since Scout still lives there and after losing Oscar, we can’t imagine Drew would ever leave Scout.

Of course, with Shiloh (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) becoming viler by the day, they could decide to have Drew go berzerk and kill him, sending the character off to prison but considering all the medals they showed he earned on Monday’s episode, that would seem out of character for an American war hero.

Soap Hub believes there is a simpler answer right there on their own soundstage. Why not just have Drew get his old looks back and give Steve Burton, who plays Drew’s twin (they were once identical but a car accident/plastic surgery explained the change when Drew thought he was Jason), a dual role?

That could accomplish quite a few things if the show were to do this. First, it’d be a great challenge for Burton and could keep him very interested in staying on the show for the longterm (not that he wasn’t already but this could solidify that), especially since Drew and Jason aren’t very much alike.

Second, they could reignite the Sam (Kelly Monaco)/Drew dynamic and finally give the fans the triangle they were dying for with Drew/Sam/Jason — how could she choose? OK, she probably could but still it would open up all those identical twin-type stories that soaps love to employ.

Third, it would give Burton the chance to click with a new love interest — perhaps Kim (Tamara Braun)? He always enjoyed crazy chemistry with Braun when she played Jason’s BFF Carly for a number of years — this time fans could finally see that turn into romantic chemistry without busting up Jason/Sam.

Bringing an actor back after the character had plastic surgery isn’t unprecedented in soaps. As the World Turns did the surgery route to explain Lily being played by Heather Rattray, but when Martha Byrne returned, no mention of her getting her former face was made. Soap fans can be forgiving — GH may want to give this option a shot.

General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
