For nearly three decades, Carly Roberts Benson Corinthos has been fascinating General Hospital viewers in different incarnations. Through all of them, the character has never been boring, but she’s also never really changed.
Yes, Carly (Laura Wright) often seems more mature after raising children and has admitted to her past mistakes, she also often seems to have not grown at all. Perhaps that’s just who she is, but she needs to stop throwing stones from her glass house.
The battle between Carly and Sonny (but often, it has seemed more Carly than Sonny) and Ava Jerome (Maura West) over a little girl who Ava actually wanted and gave birth to has been something to watch these last six years, and although the soap tries to portray Carly as the protagonist here, we do not see why. Avery (Ava and Grace Scarola) is not Carly’s daughter. She is Ava’s daughter and there has not been much justification for Carly trying to deny this for so long.
How is Avery any safer with the Corinthos Crime Family than she is with a member of the Jerome Crime Family? Ava isn’t even an active member of the mob when Sonny is. She is an art gallery owner who tries to stay out of trouble despite trouble often finding her.
Meanwhile, Carly is always getting herself in trouble and doing selfish things. Just last week, she had an old lady kidnapped from her nursing home after betraying Laura’s (Genie Francis) trust.
She also just really likes parents and children apart if she decides that’s how it should be. The woman calling Ava a “hideous woman” yesterday made sure her oldest son was kept from his biological father for years. She’s claimed Avery as her own for years. And now she has decided Nina (Cynthia Watros) doesn’t get to know Nelle (Chloe Lanier) is her daughter because she says so, which is keeping her also from knowing her grandson Wiley. How is this a sympathetic character?
Please do not get us wrong. We love Carly for who she is but who is she? To us, she is a flawed woman who likes to play God with people’s lives without much thought. Maybe it’s time she sees that. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
