Nina Reeves started her General Hospital run as a crazy vengeful loon, seeking retribution against all the people who wronged her. But, over the years, she slowly transformed into a likable, respectable businesswoman. Sadly, all the positive strides she’s made are now at risk, because of one bad decision. Nina’s Sonny secret is destroying her character.
Initially, Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) decision to keep mum about Sonny (Maurice Benard) being alive seemed justified. Carly (Laura Wright) was a total beyotch, when she phoned to tell her that her “dead” husband was alive, suffering from amnesia, and tending bar as a man named “Mike” at a pub in Nixon Falls. So why not keep the information to herself?
However, Nina’s momentary lapse in judgment and joy over sticking it to Carly should have subsided by now. As months went on, she should have thought about her impromptu decision. She should have had an attack of conscience. Nina should have realized what she was doing was wrong. After all, she wasn’t just keeping Sonny away from his wife, but also his children and friends.
Nina had the perfect chance to ‘fess up when Jax (Ingo Rademacher) followed her to Pennsylvania and spotted Sonny at the local hoe down after he was shot. He even questioned Nina about it upon waking up at the hospital. Instead of coming clean, she kept silent and let Jax believe it was just a mirage.
And when Sonny/”Mike” showed up to pay Jax a visit, Nina ushered him away as quickly as she could. She was bound and determined to keep the two men from coming face to face, and was consumed with keeping her big Sonny secret to herself.
The longer this charade continues, the worse Nina looks. And now that Smike has developed feelings for her and they’ve shared a kiss, she’s not only taking advantage of a man whose true identity she knows and has been keeping from him, but also playing with his heart. She’s totally betraying their “friendship,” as well as the one she shares with Phyllis (Joyce Guy) and Lenny (Rif Hutton).
Meanwhile, things are spiraling in Port Charles with Sonny not there to keep Cyrus (Jeff Kober) in check and keep peace in the mob world. Carly is working overtime to try to fill Sonny’s post and protect her family, even orchestrating Jason’s (Steve Burton) hospital breakout that nearly left him fatally shot. All of it may have been prevented if Nina had come clean about Sonny the minute she learned he was alive.
When the truth finally comes out, Nina’s sure to face the wrath of Sonny, Carly, and the entire Corinthos clan. And, let’s face it, it will be well deserved. The usually understanding Jax will certainly feel betrayed, too; especially when he finds out his ex has been cozying up to Sonny.
Sadly, all the progress Nina has made building her reputation over the past few years will be negated, and she’ll be back to square one. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
